Derek (surname not known, and not to be confused with antagonist
Derek C. Simmons from
Resident Evil 6) is a character from
Resident Evil Outbreak. He wears full combat gear including a sealed gas mask and helmet, much like
HUNK. He is also referred to as "U.S.S. 2" - his name wasn't known for a time.
He was a member of the Umbrella Security Service (U.S.S.) and was in fact one of those that were sent in by Umbrella to infiltrate the NEST facility, bring in Dr.
William Birkin and obtain all of his work on the Golgotha virus (G-Virus). The mission ultimately failed when one of the members of his team fired upon Dr. Birkin when they mistook him taking something from his inside pocket for him retrieving a concealed gun. This mistake would trigger a chain of events which would cause the
t-Virus outbreak of Raccoon City.
While we know he was not the one that fired the shot, he was in the room when Dr. Birkin was first killed and thus was one of the first to die at his hands after Dr. Birkin injected himself with the G-Virus and wrestling with the first stages of his mutation.
While Derek is not intended to be a playable character, he can be forced in using a cheating device and when playable he shares characteristics with
Jim Chapman. He starts the game in the Danger state (probably owing to the fact that he is always meant to die).
