The original Resident Evil was rebuilt from the ground up for the Nintendo GameCube console and absolutely everything in the game was updated - backgrounds, graphics, sounds, textures, animation, music, room layouts and gameplay was also altered to be more modern. Also, additional enemies and encounters were devised. Some puzzles were also re-worked and the locations of items were changed. The game was released in 2002 to critical and commercial success, making it one of the most popular games on the GameCube, and the game was indeed a contributor to the sales of the console in general. However, the game still did not sell as well as Capcom had hoped, which led to the future 3D action games which bore the Resident Evil title.
as the player and plays out generally the same way as the original game. However, the game also features more scenes which include other S.T.A.R.S. team members as well as providing more backstory and exposition about the mansion itself with the inclusion of
.
Ultimately the goal of the game is to explore the mansion, discover its secrets and escape to safety. Interestingly, a quasi-prequel named Resident Evil 0 was released a short time after this game which has a storyline that crosses over somewhat, making playing both games essential for completing the Mansion Incident event.
After the Wii was released by Nintendo, Capcom released a modified version of the game which was bundled with Resident Evil 0 called Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil. The game featured some motion controls but also supported traditional controls with a GameCube controller connected.
After many years being exclusive to Nintendo, the remake was remastered into HD and released onto most systems of the time in 2015: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows (PC), Xbox 360, and Xbox One which featured various enhancements such as 1080p resolution, a smoother frame rate, widescreen support (albeit with zoomed, scrolling backgrounds as the pre-rendered scenes were designed to give a claustrophobic feel), true surround sound and a 360 degree control option as opposed to the default 'tank' controls.
This HD remaster became one of Capcoms biggest selling titles which prompted them to give the same treatment to Resident Evil 0. It also may be what gave them the idea to remake other games in the series.
The game also saw a later release as part of a compilation named named Resident Evil: Origins Collection. Bringing the series back to Nintendo, Capcom released the compilation on the Switch.
