Spencer Mansion

  • The Spencer Mansion was constructed in 1967, after architect George Trevor was contracted to plan the layout by then-Umbrella CEO Oswell E. Spencer. It took 5 years from planning to completion. The project consisted of a large mansion with intricately designed rooms, a separate dormitory building, as well as a secret area built deep beneath it's foundations.

After completion, George Trevor and his family were invited to stay at the mansion as a reward. They refused, and were subsequently taken hostage to prevent them from revealing anything about the mansion to the outside world. George himself survived for some time, but was presumably killed, and his wife Jessica and daughter Lisa became experimental test subjects.

For around 30 years the mansion and the lab was fully staffed and maintained by approximately 80 employees. Notably, William Birkin worked there as a researcher for a time, but would eventually leave, and take his research elsewhere.

The building held many secrets, most importantly a high-tech underground research lab. It also contained a vast garden, a cemetery, multiple libraries, a bar, weapons rooms, a number of taxidermy rooms, a costume room, art supply room, teaching rooms, offices, a kitchen, a dining hall, firearms and armour rooms, as well as many bedrooms, bathrooms and many other typical rooms. It was built like a labyrinth, with many traps, puzzles and many different keys needed to access areas of the building.

In reality, the Mansion itself was just a façade to conceal the laboratory. This area is where Umbrella researched the Progenitor virus and the t-Virus. Lisa Trevor became the first subject to be extensively tested and injected with samples and continued to survive. Also the research that ended up with the development of the Tyrant and the Hunter B.O.W.'s originated here. This is also where the 'Mansion Incident' occurred, leading to the t-Virus outbreak of Raccoon City.

By the time S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team and Bravo Team members arrived at the mansion, creatures had taken over the entire area. Little did the Alpha team know, their captain Albert Wesker was secretly working for Umbrella, under orders to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the creatures in combat, as well as secure any incriminating information about Umbrellas research, and then to activate a self-destruct mechanism which was placed in the lab for extreme situations. It is assumed this was not done earlier because the scientists working there were either incapacitated, or lacked the necessary skill to fight the creatures and save any important data.

The mansion was destroyed along with the lab and a large area of woodland surrounding it once the bomb had exploded. The resulting fire was so large that the National Guard had to get involved.
