Barry Burton was one of the key members of S.T.A.R.S. who were involved in the
Spencer Mansion incident.
Before he joined S.T.A.R.S. Barry was a US military veteran who throughout his career earned many accolades and also as he invested his time in people he trusted, he made lots of long-lasting friendships along the way such as with
Chris Redfield. Barry acted as father figure to many of his closest friends and was always there for them if they encountered any difficulty. He knew everybody had a difficult role and he would be there to support them in any way he could.
With S.T.A.R.S., Barry was hired as a weapons expert due to his fascination with firearms and weapons customisation. He accompanied fellow colleague
Jill Valentine through most of her journey through the
Spencer Mansion, offering insight into what may have happened and saving Jill numerous times from the many traps of the mansion - even remarking that she would have become a "Jill Sandwich" if she wasn't saved by him from a room with a descending ceiling. Also on a separate occasion he referred to her as "The Master of Unlocking" - its uncertain whether he was being sarcastic there, but he did like to crack wise occasionally.
It was revealed that Barry was in fact being coerced by fellow S.T.A.R.S. Captain and secret Umbrella agent
Albert Wesker into antagonising and confusing his fellow colleagues in order to allow him to continue with his secret operation in relative peace. At one point Barry even reluctantly pulls his handgun on Jill, threatening to kill her. However soon after this Wesker reveals his true intentions and his control over Barry is revealed.
After the
Spencer Mansion incident, his whereabouts were largely unknown. Many of his ex-colleagues assumed that he had been killed or he was simply in hiding from Umbrella. At a point in time close to the fall of Umbrella it was revealed that he had joined an Anti-Umbrella organisation as a field agent.
Due to the fact that in
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis multiple ending scenarios are available, it's possible for Barry to appear who helps Jill escape Raccoon City if she doesn't manage to board the helicopter in time although this is not considered canon.
Also, Barry appears in
Resident Evil Gaiden in another non-canon appearance where he teams up with
Leon S. Kennedy to attempt to solve a
t-Virus mystery on board a luxury cruise liner called the Starlight where a B.O.W. has escaped and a mysterious girl named
Lucia is found. In the canon Resident Evil storyline, Barry and
Leon have not crossed paths.
