A fish is an aquatic vertebrate animal which live exclusively in water. While some are encountered with various mutations through infections such as Neptune or parasites such as Del Lago. However, the large majority of fish encountered are uninfected and in their natural state.
As such, they are harmless and in most cases can be left alone. However, sometimes it may be necessary to kill them for food or resource gathering. For example, The Duke requires some fish meat to create some dishes. In other cases, fish sometimes drop other useful resources such as money for gameplay reasons.
A lot of critters, including fish are simply there to add ambience and for another avenue for resources.
