Resident Evil: Revelations is survival horror game originally built for the Nintendo 3DS but has since received enhanced editions for all other popular consoles at the time and the PC.

The game was intended to return the series to its survival horror roots, with emphasis on the suspenseful aspects, inventory management, limited ammunition, puzzles and room exploration but with a few modern accoutrements such as better controls and a full 3D experience. The game features more exploration than usual such as a scanning system similar to what could be found in games like Metroid Prime or Batman Arkham Asylum.

The game uses Capcom's in-house engine MT Framework which was previously used for the 3DS powered Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, which proved its scalability from consoles to portable devices. It's worth noting that a playable demo for this game was included with The Mercenaries 3D.

In terms of gameplay, the game is split up into bite-sized episodes that mainly take place on a dilapidated cruse liner (but there are other locations) - each featuring Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine from the original Resident Evil.

The game reviewed quite well for the 3DS, with critics praising the gameplay and the atmosphere but with most criticising the jarring changes in characters and gameplay between scenarios. The graphics, performance and sound direction of the game were also critically acclaimed.

As for the HD re-releases on other consoles and PC, they were a welcome addition to other platforms but as the game was built for a handheld, model detail and gameplay were criticised somewhat despite the fact that textures and visual effects were improved, giving the game a dated look. All-in-all though, the game was considered a success - so much that a sequel, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, was released a couple of years later.
