The long-awaited Remake of Resident Evil 2 was released in 2019. Before development began, Shinji Mikami had planned to do a remake of Resident Evil 2 way back when Capcom released the Resident Evil Remake on the GameCube. Production never started as the company needed to focus on Resident Evil 4 and other games. Eventually the company approved the development of the game in 2015.
In the game, you play as either Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield. It's Leon's first day on the job in the Raccoon Police Department and Claire is looking for her brother Chris Redfield who was a member of S.T.A.R.S., who had a base in the RPD. However a Zombie apocalypse has decimated the area and it's up to them to find out what happened as well as help Claire find her brother. Along the way they meet survivors, monsters and worse.
The game was released to critical and commercial acclaim, with many seeing this game as the new best-in-series, even compared with more recent games such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village.
Like the other recent games in the series, the game uses the RE Engine, along with a simplified interface and interaction system where only highlighted items are interactable and most can be collected or used by the player somehow. The camera is freely controllable over a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective. The game pretty much follows the same plot as the original Resident Evil 2 with all of the same characters (although with updated looks and new voices) and the majority of the enemies. Some of the set pieces are lifted straight from the original also, but some are changed rather drastically for a more horror-style experience.
Many of the horror and suspenseful parts of the game were included based on player feedback on Resident Evil 6 who many thought was too action-oriented. To that end, resource management and limited ammunition makes a return in this game as well as Mr X (known to Umbrella Inc as the T-103 Tyrant) who is an unbeatable enemy that will dynamically follow the player. While the player can escape, the enemy constantly prowls the same corridors and loud sounds such as gunfire will attract it to your location, making players think twice about killing zombies.
