Annette Birkin was a talented virologist who early in her career caught the attention of Umbrella who required somebody with her talents to help develop cutting edge viruses. She was assigned the the Arklay Laboratory which was being managed by her future husband, William Birkin
The two became good friends which later blossomed into a relationship and eventually they married. They later had a daughter which they named Sherry Birkin
- but unfortunately due to their extremely high level careers they had difficulty balancing their work time and their family time. Thus, the two spent most of their time together working.
Within the next few years William made a game-changing discovery in the G
-Virus (Golgotha Virus). It was extremely unstable and required its own specialist facility to be built. This was later commissioned by Umbrella and the resulting laboratory was called NEST.
Many years of research would follow, primarily on the G
-Virus which meant Sherry was left to her own devices most of the time. Also, all their blood, sweet and tears did not attract much attention from the higher-ups at Umbrella and as such William began to ponder his position in the company. Annette and himself expected to be promoted at some point but this appeared to not be on their roadmap which disillusioned William; and Annette stood firmly at his side, even when he started to think about selling his research to the US Military.
However, Umbrella had eyes and ears everywhere and learned of Williams deception and then began to stifle his research by slashing his funding and began the process of transferring his research to somebody else.
When Umbrella sent in their UBCS (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) platoon which included HUNK
, Annette discovered that her husband had been shot in their attempts to retrieve his research; he did not come quietly like they requested and he received a life threatening injury. Tried as she might she was unable to find a way to heal him and she expected him to die from his wounds.
However William had a G
-Virus sample on him and he injected it into himself which helped him at first but it soon began his long and painful process where he would become a constantly mutating monster named G
. Annette managed to find a handgun but could not find it in her heart to kill him, as at first he still appeared to retain some of his humanity; at the very least his face was still recognisable.
After the t-Virus
outbreak of Raccoon City occurred, Annette remained at NEST doing what she did best - she continued to research the G
-Virus. When she discovered that her daughter Sherry had become infected with a G
-Embryo by William, she managed to synthesise a treatment which would remove the infection.
After Sherry recovered, she realised that there was no turning back. William had to die - her husband had now mutated to such a degree he was now a raging monster and the G
-Virus was far more potent than they could have ever imagined.
Unfortunately she met her end at the hands of William who now no longer recognised her as his wife and research partner.
Also as Resident Evil 2
and Resident Evil 2
(Remake) have alternative scenarios, how Annette dies can differ. She can initially survive the attack by William but later dies from her injuries.
