Resident Evil 4 is the sixth main game in the Resident Evil franchise. It is an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter game with horror and exploration elements, and was developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 - the game went through an incredibly long development beginning in 1999 with multiple versions being scrapped and one instance where the game was re-tooled into a different game series named Devil May Cry. The final release date for the game was in 2005, and was initially a Nintendo GameCube exclusive title - this has since changed and now Resident Evil 4 is available on many different platforms in a variety of versions.
The game has sold extremely well and continues to sell to this day with modern versions still being released - over 10 million copies have been sold to date, with 1.6 million attributed to the original GameCube release.
The overarching plot of the game features Leon S. Kennedy
, first introduced in Resident Evil 2
who has now become a U.S. government special agent who's mission was to travel to Spain and locate and recover Ashley Graham
, the U.S. President's daughter who had been kidnapped by the Los Illuminados
cult who deify a species of mind and body altering parasites called Las Plagas.
The game popularised the over-the-shoulder camera view, a style which is now common in third person games. At first the choice was polarising with fans as it differed from the fixed camera angle style of the previous games, and in addition the game was more action-oriented than previous titles as ammunition conservation is now less important, as resources can be found or purchased from a Merchant. However, this camera style stuck with the series through future games such as Resident Evil 5
and Resident Evil 6
, as well as the Resident Evil 2
and 3 Remakes.
