El Gigante ("The Giant" in English) is a massive Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.)

They are humans which have been surgically infected with a Las Plagas parasite, with it being placed onto the spinal cord in order to force a specific transformation. The El Gigante was one of the earliest experiments with implanting a parasite by the Los Illuminados cult - with their goal being create a super strong, controllable and deployable B.O.W.

The Plaga takes over the body from here, causing the brain to signal the body to create an extreme amount of growth hormone and testosterone. This, along with other unknown factors cause the body to grow massively but unevenly, with a side effect being severe brain damage. Since the Plaga has hijacked the other bodily functions, the brain is no longer the main driver - the parasite is in control of all the functions it needs to defend it's host.

El Gigante was essentially intended to be deployed as a battering ram, used to stomp, smash and crush. However, it has only simple intelligence coupled with extreme amounts of aggression - it cannot make a distinction between friend or foe, so the best course of action was to place it into an arena with the target. It's minimum intelligence is the main reason why only a small handful were produced. Two were placed in a disused coal mine as they were no longer required, and a further two were dispatched to the Salazar Castle to guard the underground area. Eventually production halted on further beasts, as they were too uncontrollable.

El Gigante wore primitive outfits such as armour, rope or leather straps - so it is possible they have enough intelligence to want to wear clothing. They appear to age at a normal level (which is unusual for a B.O.W.) which means the ones that have been discovered have been active for quite some time - as some have grown facial hair. They can also use the environment as weapons, such as throwing boulders or uprooting trees and throwing them. Finally, they have also been observed rattling scaffolding to try and force their target to lose balance and fall - which shows they have the ability to observe their surroundings and use the environment to their advantage.

As with all Plaga-infected, their weakness is their parasite. It is the main thing controlling the beast, and once enough damage has been caused to the body, it sprouts from where it was implanted onto the spine, flailing around. At this point it has released its control on the beast, and all it can do is fall to the ground and hold it's head in pain, most likely as the motor functions are limited without the parasite driving the body. Eventually, once the parasite has recovered, it retreats back into the body, regaining control. However, when it is exposed the Plaga can be damaged directly, and when enough damage has been caused, it can be cut off. It's removal causes massive shock to the beast and it cannot function without the parasite due to its massive size and other mutations, so it dies.

Interestingly, a B.O.W. named Ndesu (the name of a man-eating beast in African folklore) was produced by Tricell Inc, which bears a great similarity to El Gigante. They are not the same creature, but they share a lot of characteristics. They use a type of Plaga called a Type 2, which is a Los Illuminados Plaga combined with Leech DNA - which is similar to the way the t-Virus was created.

It had five Type 2 Plagas inserted across its body, so it's strength, durability and size were much greater than an El Gigante. Its grossly mutated body was covered in scars from the parasite implantations and the host looked much older than what would usually be selected. It appeared to have more intelligence than an El Gigante, as it wore trophies on its body as well as accessories on its wrists and ankles.

Like before, it's weaknesses were the parasites. Also like before, they all emerged the same way once the creature had been injured enough - and once all Plaga were removed, they ceased to function and died.

El Gigante appears in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, appearing to be even larger than before and more muscular.
