The Regenerador (Sometimes incorrectly referred to as the Regenerator) was a Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.) created by the
Los Illuminados cult by experimenting with implanting multiple
Plaga parasites onto a single human host. How the host body reacted to the experimentation was quite a surprise - their bodies perpetually healed and regenerated (hence the name) - even entire limbs could be quickly regrown in moments.
As this was quite a leap forward in
Plaga research, quite a few were produced as it's healing properties were an extremely valuable aspect. However, they suffered from a large drop in intelligence and mobility making them rather similar to the
t-Virus infected humans known as Zombies such as the ones from the Raccoon City incident.
They appeared to have developed a unique physiology where their internal organs and skeleton had both been dramatically altered, giving them increased flexibility and protection from internal damage. For example if their head were destroyed, it would have simply grown back in moments as the brain was far less vital. Their skin was thick and pale with a rough texture, they also had extended fingers and their mouths were large with many spiked teeth.
The remaining Regeneradores were held in cold storage by the
Los Illuminados following the experiments, research and autopsies on their creations.
Leon S. Kennedy happened upon all of these specimens when he passed through their lab whilst on a mission to rescue
Ashley Graham, the then-US Presidents daughter.
The many
Plaga implanted in their bodies were their only weak points - and destroying all of them was the only way to defeat one. In general there were around two to five parasites in their bodies. They could be seen when close to the creature although
Leon managed to locate an Infrared Scope which was a device that allowed him to see exactly where the
Plaga were on the body. Once they were defeated, their upper body exploded in a shower of fluids - only the legs remained, dead.
The
Iron Maiden B.O.W. was a similar monster created by the cult, developed using the same kind of research. It could not regenerate limbs but it had a devastating array of spikes across it's body which it could deploy and retract. Also, the
Molded monsters from Resident Evil 7 have a striking resemblance to the Regenerador.
In the
Resident Evil 4 Remake, Regeneradores are more bloated in appearance and have a tendency to slither across the floor when engaging with
Leon in battle. Parts of their flesh can be blown off, occasionally revealing glowing hearts underneath. Destroying these will cause the regeneration effect to fail and the creature will then shake erratically (they will still attempt to engage even at this stage), followed by an explosion of their entire upper body. Moments later, their legs will also explode.
