Beartrap Dog is the name given to a white Dog which is first seen with it's rear leg caught in a bear trap. When it is found by Leon Kennedy near the beginning of Resident Evil 4, it's whimpers can be heard and it's leg is injured and bloodied by the beartrap. It has no official name, and is simply called 'Dog' in the game. It can be freed in different ways, all with different results.

Leon can either shoot the beartrap, which helps the Dog escape but then the Dog is frightened and never returns. Or, you can gently release the beartrap to help the Dog escape, and releasing it in this way later the Dog helps Leon out by distracting an El Gigante monster a little later on. If Leon decides to help the Dog by releasing it, it hops away into the undergrowth but not before turning to Leon with an appreciative bark.

Or, Leon can opt to leave the Dog where it is. Which is horrible.

Either way the Dog is not seen again after the El Gigante encounter, so hopefully it survived.

Beartrap Dog appears in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, known as Dog. Much earlier in his adventure, Leon approaches what appears to be the Dog, attached to a bear trap already dead with crows pecking at its flesh. However, this was a red herring - the actual Dog appears a while later where Leon can once again save the Dog from a bear trap.

During the El Gigante encounter, the Dog appears in the middle of the battle, distracts the El Gigante and then bites its ankle which causes it to trip and crash into a quarried wall, which then collapses on top of it, causing massive damage.

While the Dog appears to vanish after the battle is over, its barks can be heard.
