The dog is
Leon's faithful ally who comes to his aid in a battle with an
El Gigante in the quarry. The two first meet outside a large house - a narrow grassy area is littered with bear traps and unfortunately this dog found one of its rear legs had been caught by the trap and was unable to remove it.
Leon comes to its aid and pulls the trap apart, allowing the dog to free itself. It then glances back at him before proceeding to jump away into some bushes and is not seen or heard from again for some time.
During the
El Gigante fight the dog appears after a while, charismatically introducing itself by howling at the top of a rock during a thunder strike and then proceeding to assist
Leon in the fight. The dog begins to distract the creature which allowed
Leon to shoot the
Plaga on its back more freely.
After a while, the dog then lunges at the monster, biting and latching onto its ankle which causes it to lose its footing and crash backwards into a quarry wall, which then starts to collapse and then fall on top of it which causes immense damage. This also gives
Leon another chance to attack the
Plaga without much difficulty.
At the end of the encounter, the dog disappears from view but its barks can still be heard.
Its possible to completely miss or ignore the dog.
Interestingly, Much earlier in his adventure,
Leon approaches what appears to be the dog, attached to a bear trap already dead with crows pecking at its flesh. However, this was a red herring - the actual dog appears a while later where
Leon can once again save the dog from a bear trap.
In the original
Resident Evil 4, the dog appears in an earlier location and the way it interrupts the
El Gigante fight is different. See:
Beartrap Dog.
