Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D was a special title released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 by Capcom and Tose Software, the latter of which have a very close association with Nintendo. The game was essentially a combination of The Mercenaries mini games from
Resident Evil 4 and
Resident Evil 5 mixed into a curated package for the console, supporting its 3D screen capabilities. The game was built on the MT Framework engine which was Capcom's main in-house scalable game engine at the time.
The game is full-featured despite being on the handheld console including a third person over-the-shoulder perspective and also includes the ability to move whilst in aiming mode (which, at the time was not available in
Resident Evil 4 or 5). In terms of gameplay, The Mercenaries modes consist of defeating a collection of enemies that featured in the two games and collecting other items in a constrained map within a time limit, with points being given based on skill. These points can then be spent on weapon or character development. A range of Resident Evil series characters feature such as
Chris Redfield,
Jill Valentine,
Albert Wesker,
Rebecca Chambers and
Barry Burton to name a few. Some unusual omissions were
Ada Wong and
Leon S. Kennedy despite the existing link to
Resident Evil 4.
There is also a multiplayer component to the game where using Wi-Fi Connectivity, players could play co-operatively.
Also the game included a short demo of
Resident Evil: Revelations which increased the appeal. Finally, the game originally was released as a physical 3DS game but eventually made its way onto the Nintendo eShop at a competitive price of $20, whereas most games were priced at least double that at the time.
In terms of critical opinion, the game received mixed but mainly positive reviews, with graphics and gameplay being praised but issues included the unreliable frame rate and the fact that as a Resident Evil title, it featured virtually no horror aspects.
