Resident Evil Code: Veronica is the fourth game in the Resident Evil franchise with the storyline following on a few months after
Resident Evil 2 and
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It is notable for being the first 'next-generation' sequel - using full 3D environments where the camera was able to move slightly with the scene as opposed to pre-rendered backgrounds with a static camera. This allowed more modern sequences such as the camera following a character down a corridor as opposed to switching from screen to screen.
The game was initially released on the Sega Dreamcast and was initially regarded as an exclusive title for the platform. However the game eventually made it to various other platforms with an enchanted edition named Code: Veronica X - this upgraded version contained improved graphics, an expanded story and several other quality of life changes.
The game features
Claire Redfield and
Chris Redfield who are both playable characters, only this time around the player is unable to select which character to play as - instead the player changes characters depending on the current part of the game; roughly the first half is played as Claire and the latter as Chris, with a small part where the player assumes the role of
Steve Burnside.
New creatures and Bio-Organic Weapons feature such as the
Bandersnatch Tyrant as well as other adversaries such as
Albert Wesker and the Ashford family, who feature prominently throughout the game. Everything takes place on Rockfort Island and later in Antarctica - two extremely remote areas, very far from the USA and Raccoon City - but both areas have become overrun with
t-Virus infected creatures due to experiments conducted by Umbrella. There is also a new strain of the Progenitor virus named the t-Veronica virus which causes vastly different effects than the standard
t-Virus and has a completely unique mechanism of action.
The game was critically acclaimed for its graphics, gameplay and storyline. It is due to have a remake sometime in the coming years.
