Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is a on-rails shooter and it includes various scenarios from the Resident Evil games prior narrated in-game by Albert Wesker
. Story elements from Resident Evil Zero
, Resident Evil (Remake) and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
are included with a final scenario being entirely new. Different lead characters from each of those games make return appearances as playable in their respective scenarios - for example Rebecca Chambers
in the Resident Evil Zero
portion and Jill Valentine
in the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
portion. The overarching storyline culminates in Umbrella inevitably being dissolved due to intel about the atrocities they've caused finally coming back to haunt them.
Initially the game was designed to be similar to Resident Evil 4
which had already appeared on the Wii - but the developers later decided to make the game much easier to pick up and play in order to pander to the more 'casual' gamer. and so the decision was made to make it an on-rails game.
The game was designed for the Wii and as such requires a Wii Remote and Nunchuk accessory in order to be played. The player would point the Wii Remote at the screen and shoot at enemies whilst the character will move from set piece to set piece automatically. Eventually the game was ported to the PlayStation 3 as part of the Resident Evil Chronicles HD collection as a PSN download (although the game did get a physical release in Japan named Biohazard Chronicles HD).
At the time of release Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles reviewed extremely well with critics praising its graphics, storytelling and shooting gameplay. In fact, it was so successful that a follow-up was made named Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
