The Stinger was an early B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) prototype developed by Umbrella; the company were experimenting with the t-Virus and scorpion DNA which resulted in an unexpectedly massive creature. Unlike a scorpion which can be held in the palm of your hand, the Stinger was approximately 10 feet long and it's body grew almost 1:1 proportionally.
Its main disadvantage for the company was that it was exactly what it looked like; just a huge scorpion. It possessed no unique abilities or any particular useful skills thus making it have limited potential for use as a B.O.W. It did however possess an extremely tough exoskeleton which was bulletproof; alas its head was unprotected and it did not possess the intelligence to shield itself in practice.
Only one single prototype was ever produced and it was held in containment in the Arklay Laboratory area; it broke out of containment during the initial t-Virus outbreak and tore its way into the saloon car of the nearby Ecliptic Express train. It caused an incredible amount of damage, ripping the roof away, attacking Billy Coen and Rebecca Chambers; however the two were ready with weaponry and made short work of the creature.
