The Crimson Head is a further mutated
t-Virus Epsilon strain infected
Zombie and at some stage the virus has entered a latent state, due to the host being unable to function either because of starvation or it has been damaged enough for it to fall, bleed out and appear to be dead.
Potentially any
Zombie with the specific strain of the virus could become a Crimson Head once they become incapacitated. The only sure-fire way to eliminate a
Zombie for good is to either destroy it's head, or by burning the corpse completely.
The
Zombie enters a process called V-ACT, where the virus 'wakes up', after a time of inaction and mutates rapidly in order to force the host to be stronger and faster than before. Aggression and speed is increased, and the heart rate maintains an exceptionally high level and blood begins seeping through the skin, and their body temperature becomes so high they appear to emit steam. They also have large glowing eyes, and their hands and feet mutate into larger, clawed extremities.
Crimson Heads are extremely difficult to evade when encountered, as they can move a lot quicker than a normal
Zombie, and because their aggression is at a much higher level, they will also attack other infected creatures to get to you if they're in the way.
There have been alternative forms of Crimson Heads, known as Javier Zombies - these were modified to be less aggressive for the purposes of greater interest from potential buyers on the black market. However, since they were only created in a small batch and from a strain of
t-Virus which was never fully documented, they ceased to exist rather quickly.
Also, there is a different strain of Epsilon, which caused a different mutation when V-ACT occurs - which zombies mutated into Lickers, which an entirely different beast altogether.
