The Grave Digger was an ordinary worm which became infected with the t-Virus when it consumed biological material in the Incineration Disposal Plant P-12A in the NEST facility. At firs the disposal plant was designed to destroy all biological material and eliminate infection - but as experimentation ramped up to above capacity the facility overloaded which caused a t-Virus contamination in the earth below which in turn affected all of the flora and fauna living in it.
They grew to enormous sizes, developed sharp mandibles on the outer parts of their mouths with smaller sharp teeth circling the inner part. It had the ability to reproduce at scale often laying hundreds of eggs at once - what emerged from the eggs was an immature parasite named a Sliding Worm. These were essentially smaller versions of the Grave Digger but could mature to adulthood within a day.
As their size was so massive they could bore through the earth effortlessly and as their sense of smell and vibration detection was also highly tuned they could detect prey from afar and then attempt to ambush them. They simply attacked by dragging prey into their mouths with their sharp mandibles.
All Grave Diggers and their young were destroyed when Raccoon City was engulfed by a missile.
