Umbrella Corps is a tactical team-based third-person shooter based in the Resident Evil universe (although the name "Resident Evil" does not appear anywhere in it's title, it is technically known as "Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps", or "Biohazard Umbrella Corps" in Japan). It's built on the Unity engine which is an unusual choice as Capcom usually develop using their own tools.

There are two different campaigns each with their own storyline and timeline. In the single player potion of the game, "The Experiment", the player character (a user-customisable avatar with the canon name of 3A-7) is sent on missions by a mysterious company using the Umbrella name (Umbrella Corporation - a different company to the Umbrella Corporation from the past) in order to test out new equipment and to pit their skills against the many B.O.W.s that still roam these areas. This campaign is essentially a 'horde mode' (waves of enemies which gets progressively tougher as more and more enemies spawn and your resources become Lighter as time goes on).

It's strongly implied by the games story that 3A-7 is HUNK or at least related to them in some way, although nothing is explained outright.

In the multiplayer campaign, the timeline is different and it takes place sometime between Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 7. Missions that take place are often about collecting old Umbrella research which could be extremely valuable and also for the purposes of training exercises. This often culminates in a civil war between other similar organisations with similar goals, so alongside fighting B.O.W.s, the player is also fighting opposing organisations (or teams for the purposes of the game).

Although Zombies feature quite heavily in this game they are nothing more than fodder in most cases. In fact, players are equipped with a weapon/tool called a Zombie Jammer, which dissuades Zombies from attacking. Although on the flip-side there is also a weapon/tool called a Jammer Buster, which reverses the effect. This can lead to a cat-and-mouse situation between players.

While the game was developed to capitalise on the new trend of fast-paced shooters and eSports, the game ultimately failed to capture an audience with it's small and uninspired levels and the fact that it was (kinda) released as a Resident Evil game but really didn't offer much to advance or compliment the series. Some reviewers even said it looked nothing like a Resident Evil game. Despite this, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu scored the game very highly at 36/40. The game was released for Windows and PlayStation 4 only.
