Because of Ada's skill and reliability, he had a lot of respect for her; so much so that he became obsessed with her, wanting to use her for as many delicate missions as possible. However his decision to destroy an entire city did not sit well with Ada and she sought to leave his employ. With her departure she also vowed never to respond to his attempts to contact her which drove him insane. He figured that he needed to replace Ada with an equal and the only way he thought he could do that was to create one; so he set out to do just that.
He decided to experiment on hundreds of women, stealing them off the streets and altering their biochemistry in order to attempt to create a perfect facsimile of Ada for his own nefarious needs. Eventually he employed a brilliant young scientist named
Carla Radames. Initially she was tasked with general bio weapons busywork, but Carla wanted to impress
Derek so much so that she pushed for his attention at every turn, over-delivering wherever possible. This worked in her favour and later her hard work culminated in the discovery of the C-Virus; this was superior to the
t-Virus as the host would often retain their intelligence and any mutations could be controlled or triggered.
While
Derek was working on his Ada project, he continued with his US Government and The Family duties willfully; one of his next actions was to take
Sherry Birkin into protective custody - she had just recently escaped from the NEST facility with her life.
Derek became her legal guardian as both her parents died in the prior incident but he also allowed one of her rescuers
Claire Redfield to visit her. However
Derek had other motives; he also used
Sherry to extract a G-Virus sample from her body as she was previously infected with it and then inoculated. The G-Virus was used in the development of the C-Virus; it may have been the final missing piece.
After this success Carla was moved to work on the
Ada Wong project which now made use of the C-Virus. At first it was disappointing with over 12,000 female bodies to dispose of. Finally
Derek himself realised that the best genetic match for Ada was Carla herself. Taking advantage of her feelings towards him, he convinced her to become the final
Test Subject.
The test proved to be a success, what emerged was a perfect clone of Ada, only her personality could be re-programmed by
Derek; the first thing he did was alter her feelings so that she was in love with him. However what
Derek did not know was that Carla was beginning to re-emerge inside the clone Ada's psyche, and those feelings were beginning to grow. Convinced that nothing was wrong,
Derek gave the clone Ada her own submarine base as well as control over an entire legion of The Family soldiers.
After some time, Carla regained control; she was furious with what
Derek did to her, he essentially tried to overwrite her with another woman. She vowed to do anything in her power to destroy his life's work.
Meanwhile back in America, once
Sherry Birkin became old enough she was offered a US Government role; she was tasked with bringing back
Jake Muller who was known to be the son of
Albert Wesker who was an infamous bioterrorist who had since died; he had unique blood as he had been enhanced with superhuman abilities. Interestingly due to the G-Virus remnants in her system she was gifted with a rapid healing power which made her an incredibly useful asset to
Derek.
In her mind,
Sherry believed that
Derek was after Jake in order to understand his unique biology in order to protect the world; in actual fact he was concerned that Jakes blood contained antibodies which could render his C-Virus inert - so he needed it so he could then re-engineer the virus so that it would not be affected by the supposed antibodies.
He also sent his clone Ada in tow to make sure that they completed their mission; little did he know that Carla was now in control of the body and so she decided to alter the plan to ensure that she was able to continue her own C-Virus research in secret. Carla reported back to
Derek that
Sherry and Jake simply went missing and were likely dead; the truth was that Carla brought them with her to China instead.
With
Derek feeling the pressure to silence the US President
Adam Benford who was about to make a speech in Tall Oaks which would reveal that Umbrella and the US Government were involved in previous incidents such as the Arklay Laboratory and Raccoon City. Although
Derek initially tried to simply dissuade the President from revealing the truth, the pressure from The Family forced him to do the unthinkable; kill the President and thousands of other innocent lives by releasing the C-Virus into Tall Oaks using B.O.W.s (Bio-Organic Weapons) called
Lepotica which could disperse the virus through the air.
Clearly becoming unhinged, he also used DSO agent
Helena Harper's younger sister
Deborah Harper as leverage to get the former involved. Threatening with her life, he forced Helena to manipulate the Presidents schedule to ensure that he would become infected with the C-Virus and the lie to her superiors about what really happened. The plan worked in Dereks favour; the virus was unleashed and the President was turned into a
Zombie.
As Helena was later attempting to push the blame on
Derek, he used his position to deny any involvement; he used
Leon S. Kennedy's arrival to his advantage, citing that their sudden appearance was extremely convenient and so pinned the blame on them. He then ordered for the destruction of Tall Oaks, similarly to how he handled the Raccoon City incident many years earlier.
However he began receiving calls from ghosts; firstly
Ada Wong got in touch - the original
Ada Wong who cut of all contact many years earlier. She revealed to him that his clone Ada had failed and Carla had regained control - and that she was out to destroy him and everything that he had worked towards. He made the decision to confront her in person; on the way he received another call from his former foster child
Sherry along with Jake; he thought they were dead, in truth they were alive and kicking - surviving albeit as test subjects for Neo Umbrella.
When he went to China confront his last remaining demons, he realised that a other C-Virus attack had occurred there and that Neo Umbrella were taking credit for everything that had happened up to this point. Irritated beyond belief that all his years of research were not being credited to him, he proceeded to confront Carla but he was interrupted by
Leon and Helena who he thought had died - unfortunately for him, his contact
Ingrid Hunnigan had lied to him about their deaths in order to protect them.
Sherry and Jake soon joined the group and
Derek admitted to them all that it was he who orchestrated the attack in Tall Oaks and it was also his decision to kill the President. He then quickly ordered the deaths of
Leon and Helena but was scuppered by one of Carlas J'avo units who attacked him. The beginning of the end was at hand; he mostly avoided injury but a stray C-Virus syringe made contact with his body and he became infected.
His strong will forced him to push onward and in complete surprise of what Carla had done to him, he stumbled toward an escape route on a nearby train. He tried to rationalise his actions with his last moments but he was too far gone; the C-Virus then took hold and he underwent a gruesome mutation where his body split and increase in muscle mass to where he resembled a four-legged monster.
While he still retained some intelligence, he was now overcome with rage and attempted to kill
Leon and Helena; however he was shot and fell from the train. Once he regained consciousness he continued to mutate into an even more grotesque beast and made his way to where he began working on his Ada clone project many years before. The building was occupied by BSAA agents at the time and he quickly made short work of them all, clearing the building and allowing Zombies to breach the interior. He was met with an unlikely adversary;
Ada Wong. He initially did not believe that she was the real Ada and first began chastising her for things that Carla had done, and the anger inside him forced another mutation which caused him to increase in size yet again.
By this point his mind was now overcome with anger; all rational thought had now left his mind - his only action to take now was to eliminate all on his path. Taking an immense amount of damage, the C-Virus in his body began to falter, his mutations began to revert back and forth which caused him immense pain and shock; oftentimes reverting all the way back to his prior human form albeit temporarily. It may be that he was fighting his own mutations to attempt to remain in control. However he continued to sustain damage until his body could take no more; in a partially mutated state he collapsed and fell unconscious.
The survivors now attempting to make their escape,
Derek regained consciousness once more and tracked the team to the top of the building. He resumed his attack in his partially mutated state; his mind by this point was so damaged that he turned his attention primarily to
Leon who he assumed to be Ada's lover. He thought that by eliminating
Leon he may earn Ada's favour as her true love; obviously this logic was inherently flawed but his mind was broken by this point.
Being severely weakened by the continued onslaught, he managed to take hold of the various C-Virus infected creatures that were littered throughout the area to absorb and use them to repair his body. Other Zombies began to eat his damaged flesh but he used this as an opportunity to absorb them at the same time. This concoction of organic material forced another mutation; this time he mutated into an insect-like form.
Using his absorption properties as an advantage, Ada managed to trick
Derek into absorbing a
Zombie which had become impaled with a lighting rod from the roof which accidentally merged the rod with his head. This now served as a severe weak point and it was considered a part of his body; he could not remove it without harming himself considerably.
A strong bolt of lightning was drawn to the rod and he was electrocuted; this staggered him and severely weakened him. As is tradition with
Leon and Ada, they managed to get into a helicopter which had a Rocket Launcher on board.
Leon fired at the monster
Derek which caused him to lose his balance and fall from the roof.
Derek was now desperately trying to keep his mutations together but the amount of damage he sustained was too high - the mutated portions of his body started to expand and burst, leaving behind a destroyed human shell.
He fell and was pierced by an obelisk on the ground; in vain he desperately continued to try and force mutations to overcome his wounds but he had lost far too much organic material and there was nothing nearby that he could absorb. He gradually lost energy and then died a complete mess, with the blood flowing out of him somehow resembling the old Umbrella logo pattern when viewed from the helicopter.
Derek was gone; but he still got away with everything he had done by this point. Unfortunately for him and his legacy, a data chip was found which contained evidence that
Derek was the culprit in everything that had happened which was then released to the public. Everyone else involved was cleared of any involvement - and now the world could start to rebuild. Soon after this a C-Virus vaccine would be produced which rendered his life's work harmless.
