The Maiden (later discovered to have the name Ingrid) is a character that appears in the 'Maiden' demo which was released a few months prior to the final
Resident Evil Village title. While the character doesn't appear in the main
Resident Evil Village, she is encountered as a regular monster (not named or highlighted in any way) and has left notes for whoever finds them. In the game, specifically in Castle Dimitrescu, there are paintings which resemble the artwork of Maiden.
She was a young girl who awakens as a prisoner in Castle Dimitrescu; she finds herself trapped in the dungeon area where she finds a note left by a previous occupant with steps on how to escape. It is assumed she is a local and has been kidnapped. She wears a necklace which she has made herself. This necklace can be found on her body later by
Ethan Winters in the main game.
The Maiden manages to find her way out of the dungeon and learns of the castles occupants along the way including Countess
Alcina Dimitrescu who currently runs the house with three others at her side; Bela, Cassandra and Daniela (A, B, C, D).
She also learns about the production of the house wine which is named Sanguis Virginis; although it is not outrightly stated it's heavily implied that the blood of house servants, or "Maidens" are tortured and killed for their blood and that is used in the wine. The name of the wine itself translates as "Maiden's Blood" which is even more blatant. It can be surmised that The Maiden was captured in the dungeon ready to be 'processed' for the wine.
She makes her way through the main castle and attempts to reach the door to a courtyard area, about to escape - however she is accosted by one of the denizens of the Castle, one of the mutant 'daughters' of Alcina, Daniela who attacks and bites The Maiden. Here, she passes on the Mold infection which they all have.
She manages to escape Daniela but soon finds herself in front of
Alcina Dimitrescu herself who introduces herself in a calm and courteous manner but at the same time her hand transforms into a large claw which she uses to impale The Maiden in the chest which kills her instantly. This is the end of the Maiden demo.
Some time later, she gradually transforms into a Moroaicǎ, and returned to the dungeon. Moroaicǎ are essentially classed as failed experiments and left to rot. A handful of them dwell there alongside Ingrid and find weapons such as swords which they use to fend off attackers.
Ethan Winters eventually finds her in the dungeon along with others and kills them - the necklace she wore is then taken by him (named Ingrid's Necklace in
Resident Evil Village) and can be sold to
The Duke for Lei.
