Rita Phillips is a character from
Resident Evil Outbreak.
She was a police officer working for the Raccoon Police Department (RPD) and worked directly under
Marvin Branagh. When the
t-Virus outbreak occurred within the city during September / October 1998, the majority of the city population became zombies due to the water supply being contaminated. Marvin instructed the small team of survivors he had left to hold the fort, fortify the police station and eliminate any remaining threats and try to turn the station into a safe haven.
However, due to the sheer number of infected that were growing in number by the hour she had no choice but to look for alternative options - it was then that she discovered the network of secret underground passageways that the RPD building was seemingly built on top of. Marvin, having examined the new plan swiftly admitted that the underground passageways were a no-go area, as they most likely led to the Raccoon City sewer system and they would only find more infected there.
Instead, Rita decided to use a series of air vents to escape the building and took a handful of survivors with her. Having successfully escaped, they found an RPD vehicle and drove back to the station in order to rescue the rest of the surviving team - however, it was too late and the station had become overrun. Marvin was still alive but he had received a bite to the torso area and while he managed to survive for quite some time, he eventually became a
Zombie shortly after
Leon S. Kennedy and
Claire Redfield entered the building.
Having no choice but to leave the others behind, Rita reluctantly left the city by the road. It's assumed she survived, but her fate is ultimately unknown.
She can be unlocked as a playable character in the sequel, where she shares characteristics with
Alyssa Ashcroft. Technically she can be played in the first game but only through use of a cheating device.
She is noteworthy for being one of the few secondary characters in the game that have a more 'fleshed out' appearance but do not make an appearance in other games.
