HAOS (Which translated from Serbian means "Chaos", but the word is capitalised) was a special kind of Chrysalid-based B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) created by Neo Umbrella as their counterpart to the earlier Tyrant project - a hulking, ultimate B.O.W. with the ability to spread the C-Virus on a worldwide scale. It had a built-in ability to release the C-Virus as a gas in an extraordinarily concentrated form.
It was developed in a purpose-built facility on the Chinese seabed and was housed in a special incubator device which stimulated its growth and protected it at the same time. It was definitely based on a human host as there is a human skeleton embedded into its body (complete with striking blue eyes, which is unusual), but its also likely that Octopus DNA was at least used in its creation. It remained cocooned in its Chrysalis until it was awakened one day by Chris Redfield and his B.S.A.A. team.
It resembled a large skeleton covered in a thick layer of gelatinous skin, along with tentacles - the lower part of its body seemed less developed, with a mass of flesh serving as its lower half. It had three hearts which maintained its huge form. It also has the ability to revert back into a Chrysalid form where necessary in order to reconstitute its body to either reduce or increase its size. When it was released, it was incomplete at around 70% complete which is why it has an unfinished-looking form. It was released early because of the unplanned death of Carla Radames. If left to completion, it would have likely taken over the world and many more HAOS creatures would have been developed.
Interestingly, the lower half its body can also exist as a separate entity with its own central nervous system. It can be detached by the creature where necessary.
When it awoke, it emerged from its Chrysalis and instantly gave chase. The creature was massive and it took up an entire room. However it was still completely mobile and was surprisingly agile. It managed to kill a few members of the team including Piers Nivans who temporarily revived himself by injecting himself with the C-Virus. This gave Chris the opportunity to escape and soon after the entire facility was destroyed which took down HAOS and everything else living in it.
