Floatstinger

The Floatstinger is an enormous monster with Moth attributes. It emerged from it's chrysalis after being weakened by Harry Mason in it's earlier pupal form, a caterpillar named a Twinfeeler. After it's prior defeat, it escaped it's habitat and travelled through Silent Hill to the Post Office which was situated across the road from the Alchemilla Hospital. Harry soon followed and continued the fight.

It's appearance resembles a gigantic silk Moth only with an incredibly thick body which somehow it's wings allow it to stay aloft. Curiously, it also has relatively thick legs situated in the top half of its body which it can use to grab and scratch as well as make certain gestures. Finally, it has a poison Stinger which is very unusual for a Moth (given that the Floatstinger merely resembles a Moth, it's highly likely that it is not a true Moth).

The Stinger itself appears to be around 1-2 feet long and has the capability of emitting a poison cloud as well as administer a toxin directly, making it a very dangerous monster indeed.

Throughout it's encounter with Harry it stays airborne all of the time, only falling out of the sky once it dies. Also, it takes place entirely outdoors on the rooftop of the Post Office which in itself is quite a large building in comparison with others in Silent Hill.

In terms of how best to approach the battle, it's best to keep mobile and use powerful firearms as standing still too long or being too close to it will result in a sting. Playing the encounter safely, using the large flat area of the rooftop to keep your distance is the simplest approach.

In terms of it's symbolism within Silent Hill, it represent Alessa Gillespie's love of all things butterfly, Moth, caterpillar and the like - albeit a very twisted version of one. It's existence also symbolises the act of change and evolution, as the larval Twinfeeler metamorphosed into the Floatstinger, and Alessa herself goes through many changes throughout the game.

Finally, the Floatstinger appears to have some influence over the transition between Otherworld and the Fog World as when it is defeated, it triggers a shift back to the latter. This may also play a little into the fact that the creature itself was able to change itself - it having the ability to change Silent Hill would be an appropriate skill.
