The Hanged Scratcher is a large, muscular monster which has the apparent shape of a grasshopper but also has a mixture of amphibian and reptilian features (particularly their heads which seem lizard-like). These creatures roam the infested sewer systems of Silent Hill. Their name describes their actions well; they have a pair of extremely sharp claws which they can use to hang on walls or ceilings - and of course the claws can be used as slashing, stabbing or scratching weapons. They are incredibly strong - so much so that they can support the entire weight of the creature and they also make a metallic clinking sound as they hit surfaces as they move around.

Their appearance in the sewers is particularly troublesome for Harry Mason as he encounters them when attempting to travel through there. As the area is not meant to be civilian-accessed, lighting is minimal and because he is underground, his radio will not work so there is no way to prepare for an encounter other than trying to listen out for their claws hitting the ground. In addition to this, Hanged Scratchers tend to attack in pairs or threes meaning an ambush is always just around the corner.

The best way for Harry to deal with a Hanged Scratcher is to either hit it hard with the Hammer or use a powerful firearm such as a Shotgun.

In terms of their symbolism, they represent Alessa Gillespie's fear of certain insects, particularly jumping ones such as locusts but paired with her preference for fairy-tale creatures such as dragons and also some extinct life such as dinosaurs. Their hanging behaviour may also represent a literal death by hanging which is a recurring theme throughout Silent Hill, particularly in Otherworld and Nowhere.
