Harry Mason's story began when he and his wife Jodie Mason found an abandoned Baby on the grounds of a cemetery on the side of the road - they decided to adopt her as their own and named her Cheryl Mason. For the next three years, the family lived together until one day Jodie lost her life battling an incurable disease.
After many years, Harry continued to mourn his wife's passing, raising Jodie on his own. A she got older she began to recognise that her father was causing himself additional pain by refusing to let go. She convinced him to take some time out and they both went on a road trip, settling in the sleepy resort town of Silent Hill.
On the way, their car experienced technical issues and as such their journey unexpectedly extended into the night. After they got back onto the road Harry had to swerve to avoid a person who was in the middle of the road - later revealed to be the traumatised Alessa Gillespie. His car flipped and he lost consciousness.
He awoke from a disturbing nightmare in Café 5to2 but Cheryl was nowhere to be found. He spoke to a police officer named Cybil Bennett and explained that his daughter was missing and that he was concerned for her safety. Although they didn't quite see eye to eye, she agreed to help him find her.
On his quest to find Cheryl, he encountered various grotesque monsters and creatures which he had to either avoid or fight. Harry was not a born fighter and not particularly fit - his expertise was in writing, but here he had to learn to defend himself and push forward.
In his nightmare, he explored a dark alley - and later he happened upon that same alleyway in real life. There, he finds a scrap from Cheryl's sketch pad which simply says 'to school' written in red crayon. He finds his way through the fog-covered streets of the town until he finds Midwich Elementary School. From there, he uncovers several other clues which point him in the direction of a church named the Balkan Church - this is where he meets the first introduced member of the Gillespie family, Dahlia, who is part of the religious cult names The Order.
Dahlia Gillespie (who turns out to be Alessa's mother) appears to know more about Cheryl's disappearance than she lets on but never the less she provides Harry with some information which allows him to press on to the Alchemilla Hospital - along the way he sees flashes of Alessia in several places causing him more unease.
Whilst exploring the Hospital he meets the administrator who is named Michael Kaufmann who offers some information, but he appears quite suspicious to Harry so he keeps on his guard. He also meets a nurse named Lisa Garland who also imparts knowledge on the history of the town and they speak about Cheryl. Soon after, Harry receives information from his friend Cybil that a young girl was spotted at Silent Hill lake - the two decide to meet there. At some point earlier in time, Kaufmann betrays Lisa as it is uncovered that he is part of The Order and he is later killed by Lisa for his deception, as she was forced by him to care for the demonic vessel Alessa, and they continued to work together despite the animosity.
Harry uncovers more about The Order, Alessia and their goals and eventually, he meets with Dahlia and Cybil and plan to stop Alessa from reducing the entire town to nothingness. On the way, Cybil is unfortunately infected with a large mind-altering parasite that turns her against her friends. Harry has no other option but to kill her in battle - much to his reservations. Dahlia had tricked them both and got them right where she wanted them - she was working with the same goal as Alessia all along.
Soon after this, Harry is transported to Dahlia's maze-like world of Nowhere. It is here that he finally reunited with his daughter Cheryl who it turns out was inhabiting the same body as Alessa - and this body - containing two souls, was destined to be the vessel of their god. He spots the nurse Lisa - who becomes engulfed by flames once Alessa begins the process to split her soul from Cheryl's, she bleeds profusely from every orifice and appears to be dead.
After being doused in a red substance named Aglaophotis (a herbal substance designed to repel demons) by Kaufmann (who had been keeping the substance hidden) a monster called Incubus is spawned from Alessa which firstly turns on Dahlia, killing her - then it turns its attention to Harry. After a long battle, Harry succeeds in felling the beast and soon after Nowhere starts to destabilise and fall apart. As Harry and Kaufmann try to escape, Lisa appears once more and drags the latter back down and kills him.
In the destruction, Alessa hands Harry something as he is about to pass through the portal back to Silent Hill. When he emerges, he sees that he has been given a new-born Baby which was a true combination of Cheryl and Alessa but with a fresh mind, body and soul.
Harry once again raises this child as his own and decides to name her Heather - who herself later returns to Silent Hill after living adjacent to it for many years.
