Josh Stone is a member of the B.S.A.A. (Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance) and was tasked with training new recruit
Sheva Alomar at their West African facilities. Though many months of training, the two developed a close (strictly platonic) bond.
Eventually he was dispatched to nearby Kijuju where he led the Delta team. There had been a tip-off that black a market sale of experimental B.O.W.s (Bio-Organic Weapons) was about to go down somewhere in the area - their mission was to infiltrate the area and find out what was going on. He takes his team through the area and locates an American colleague of the B.S.A.A.,
Chris Redfield who had since partnered up with Sheva. Josh reunites with his old colleague and passes on some intel to Chris - Josh doesn't yet realise that this intel is of great personal importance to Chris as it features the whereabouts of his missing friend
Jill Valentine.
The teams are soon divided when a B.O.W. is released and engages Josh and his team. They battle the monster and then flee to an Oil Field where they continue to engage multiple hostile creatures. After some time, he realises that he is the only man left in his squad. Upholding his responsibilities, he turns his attention to Chris and Sheva who have since joined him and helps create a safe path for them by unlocking doors and extending walkways.
Josh then finds a speedboat and urges Chris and Sheva to escape with him. After a short-lived battle with
Ricardo Irving, he separates from Chris and Sheva and returns to base.
However he later changes his mind and returns to where he last encountered them and then starts to look for them in order to safely extract them. Unfortunately the two of them were just a little step ahead of him at every turn. He luckily happens upon the disoriented
Jill Valentine who had only recently battled Chris and Sheva in a medicated state.
He explains the situation and the two make it to a B.S.A.A. helicopter, equipped with a rocket launcher. They encounter Chris battling a mutated
Albert Wesker in a volcanic area and provide air support. Wesker is hit by a rocket which causes him to slip and fall into lava. Although he attempted to counter-attack, continuous fire from Chris and Sheva finished him off for good.
Josh then re-oriented the helicopter and (presumably) flew back to the nearest B.S.A.A. headquarters.
Interestingly, the only reason that Josh was kept alive was for gameplay reasons - so both Chris and Sheva could be free to play regularly at any point. e.g. Josh needed to drive the boat or fly the helicopter in those specific stages. If he wasn't there, one of the players or the A.I. would be forced to do this.
