Bruce McGivern serves as the protagonist and player character of
Resident Evil: Dead Aim. He is a member of the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) as an active combatant and as such he is routinely dispatched into warzones and gained a reputation amongst his colleagues for lacking strategy, being too reckless and generally leaving bodies in his wake without much care for his own safety, only the mission seems to matter.
He has a youthful appearance with dark, dishevelled hair which is dyed blonde at the ends, along with a well-groomed goatee. He wears similar clothing and accessories to
Leon S. Kennedy when he infiltrated the
Los Illuminados (the clothing and equipment may be standard issue). It's also worth noting that he uses his flashlight almost all the time, even in rooms that are lit - possibly for tactical reasons (so he can see shadows more clearly etc).
As part of USSTRATCOM, he was promoted into the super-secret Anti-Umbrella division (Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Team) along with
Leon S. Kennedy (although the two never worked directly with one another) - they both remained in this particular branch until its dissolution some years alter.
His role before the beginning of Dead Aim was to infiltrate the Umbrella-owned cruise liner "Spencer Rain" and stop an
Umbrella Executive by the name of
Morpheus D. Duvall who was reportedly planning on launching several missiles at key locations of the United States and China which contained the
t-Virus - which, if allowed to happen would create catastrophic outbreaks throughout the two countries and cause worldwide instability. A ransom of 50 billion USD was requested by Duvall in exchange for protection.
Bruce successfully infiltrates the ship. Curiously, along with other Umbrella samples, a new version of the
t-Virus was also present on the ship which was named the t+G virus. The cargo hold of the ship also contained various Umbrella B.O.W.s (Bio-Organic Weapons).
It is soon learned that Duvall has gone rogue from Umbrella and the company had been trying to find ways to shut him down. One of their actions was to infiltrate the ship themselves and cause an outbreak there, which was successful.
Immediately after Bruce gained access to the ship, he realises that most of the crew and passengers have been transformed into Zombies and that an outbreak must have happened. He soon meets with a Chinese associate named
Fong Ling and they both proceed carefully, fighting their way through Zombies and other creatures until they find Duvall.
After some combat encounters, Duvall is beaten until he is almost dead. He seeks refuge in a security room and like
William Birkin before him, he decides the only thing he can do is inject himself with a virus to bring him back from the brink - he infects himself with a sample of the t+G virus and mutates rapidly into an extremely powerful form with supernatural abilities.
Bruce also encounters a new prototype form of the
T-103 Tyrant named the
T-091 which he defeats with relative ease. Shortly after this encounter, the ship runs aground on an island and catches fire, eventually exploding. Bruce,
Fong Ling and Duvall all survive the accident.
As luck would have it, the island they happened on served as a dumping ground for failed Umbrella experiments so the mission was far from over - there is a terminal inside an Umbrella facility which can still remotely launch the virus-laced missiles, and Duvall was quickly making his way there. After battling more B.O.W.s that have yet to perish, they proceed through the facility.
Bruce and
Fong Ling are separated when Duvall captures and makes her unconscious. Stopping at nothing to prevent the missile launch, Bruce presses on and finds an experimental weapon called a Charged Particle Rifle - a special Umbrella-developed weapon which is designed to one-shot kill any B.O.W.
When Bruce catches up to Duvall, he uses the weapon on him which forces his mutations to change rapidly which ends up with him as an unrecognisable mass - again, similar to other infected with heavily damaged tissue such as G or
Nemesis T-Type. With Duvall defeated, Bruce rouses
Fong Ling from her slumber and they both prevent the missile launch, saving both the U.S.A. and China from total destruction.
After the mission, it's assumed that Bruce begins a relationship with
Fong Ling as they both share a kiss.
Bruce isn't seen again in any other Resident Evil titles (as of 2022).
