Fong Ling ( 鳳鈴 ), localised as Fongling in English versions is a character from
Resident Evil: Dead Aim. She acts as
Bruce McGivern's sidekick and love interest. Her native China and the United States were targeted by a rogue
Umbrella Executive named
Morpheus D. Duvall who intended to launch hundreds of
t-Virus laced ballistic missiles from an ocean liner named Spencer Rain, to key points in both countries, causing localised viral outbreaks which would soon lead to a global catastrophe. Umbrella themselves were not overly fond of his motives and as such tried themselves to thwart his efforts, which led to an infiltration which caused an outbreak on Spencer Rain itself, as well as issuing tip-offs to both American and Chinese government agencies which led Fong Ling to be dispatched to the location by the Ministry of State Security in order to pacify Duvall and stop the missiles from being launched.
Her role was to infiltrate Spencer Rain and wait to be contacted in person by an American US-STRATCOM agent, namely
Bruce McGivern. At first, their meetings were cold as they had only read about one another via mission briefings and documentation which painted negative pictures of the two. In fact, the first time they actually encountered one another there was a struggle where Ling put Bruce into a submission headlock. Surprisingly, Bruce even attempted to flirt and hit on her - which she swiftly passed on. She also called him a 冬瓜 (Dong Gua) which meant she thought he was an idiot. However, she told Bruce that it meant that she thought he was cool.
Throughout the mission, Ling and Bruce met and split up on several occasions and fought a number of Umbrella monsters such as hordes of Zombies and including a few unique B.O.W.s such as the
T-091 Tyrant. Eventually Duvall himself was transformed into an infected creature when he injected himself with an experimental t+G virus. In the midst of all the chaos and destruction the ship crashed onto an island - an island which turned out to be home to an Umbrella facility which worked as a sort of recycling plant for failed B.O.W. projects - and conveniently also contained a terminal which would be able to confirm the missile launches.
Interestingly, Duvall had set a ransom demand of billions of dollars for protection against the missiles - the Chinese government swayed to this and informed him that they would pay it. This made Lings presence on the Spencer Rain something which the government would now deny ever took place; essentially her life was no longer a concern. Knowing that Duvall would still launch despite getting the money she pressed on with Bruce's help - first he helped her remove the tracker that they had implanted in her body before she was dispatched and then they both worked together to find Duvall and stop the missiles from being launched.
Eventually the duo found Duvall once again and a battle ensued. Gaining an upper hand with his new-found abilities, Duvall attacked Ling and rendered her unconscious. However, soon after this Duvall had bitten off more than he could chew - due to his t+G virus infection his body was constantly in a state of repair and continually mutated to a point where the mutations became more abhorrent until he eventually resembled nothing more than a mass of flesh. Bruce was able to defeat him with special weaponry and the missile launches were aborted. Rousing her back into consciousness, Bruce and Ling then escaped the facility by sea and then awaited pickup from a rescue helicopter.
Bruce then discussed their futures - he asked if she would come to stay with him in America. He was met with a refusal, China was her home and she wanted to continue to protect it. Amusingly, he surprised Ling by repeating 冬瓜 (Dong Gua) from before, and he confirmed that he knew what it meant all along as he had spent some time in China and knew parts of the language. All this time, he knew that she thought he was an idiot. With this exchange breaking the ice a little, they both shared a kiss and the game ends.
It's assumed that the two formed a relationship together and quit their respective agency careers as neither of them have been heard from ever again since.
