Nautilus was the name given to a failed Umbrella experiment which can only be described as a birthing pod. It was meant to have been destroyed on the offshore waste disposal facility. It was delivered to the facility and thought to have been destroyed and then flushed down its subterranean waterways. However, it survived and then flourished for a while, growing and reproducing constantly.
According to limited research on the Nautilus, it was based on an underwater filter feeder called a sea squirt. It developed into a large mass with a single opening at the front from which many young emerged, nicknamed Torpedo Kids which are torpedo-shaped and have eerie human-like heads complete with eyes and teeth.
Due to its origins as a filter feeder, its likely that it latched onto an optimal surface and fed on what nutrients and minerals it could find. The creature retained many characteristics of the sea squirt including the fact that it was completely immobile. It's likely that a lot of time had passed before it was found in the waterways as it had grown very large and was capable of birthing a near-infinite amount of Torpedo Kids.
The Nautilus itself was defenceless and harmless - however the Torpedo Kids it produced could harm or even kill. It's not known if Torpedo Kids were a larval form and could mature into other forms as the entire organism was finally destroyed not long after it was re-discovered.
