Morpheus D. Duvall was a senior Umbrella researcher and had a storied past with the company - he was mainly involved with development of bio-technologies such as B.O.W.s and also had a hand in the development of the
t-Virus (and later the t+G virus). One of his primary goals was to create the most visually perfect and beautiful specimens.
As his influence within Umbrella grew, he was given command of a secret base located on an island in the Northern Atlantic ocean which contained a B.O.W. disposal facility as well as an underwater facility nicknamed the Bio-Sphere. While he was known for his callous leadership style, he did have respect amongst members of his team as well as the company at large. However, this all changed after the Mansion Incident in the Arklay region - Umbrella stopped at nothing to hide their crimes and as such blame on the incident was solely blamed on Duvall, citing that he had failed to contain the infection and as such he was abandoned by his superiors and his card had been marked.
However, due to his popularity with his staff, they remained by his side and absconded from view of Umbrella executives, continuing to research in relative peace. Also due to his fascination with beauty, he underwent the knife and altered his appearance - in an effort to achieve perfection and to make him less recognisable to any Umbrella spies that may be within his ranks.
What Duvall needed next was money. He wanted to create a civilisation of perfect, beautiful people in the Bio-Sphere - he decided to hold two powerful nations to ransom to the tune of 50 billion US dollars. The threat would be missile strikes in which the warheads contained various viruses and bio-weapons which would devastate both, and then the rest of the world would follow.
Duvall and his mercenary group stole bioweapons from an Umbrella facility in Paris including samples of the
t-Virus and the new t+G virus, commandeered an Umbrella ship named Spencer Rain which contained B.O.W.s in its cargo hold with the intention of selling them on the black market. Instead, the ship was redirected to Duvall's secret base and the monsters were released, causing an outbreak and killing almost everyone on board - those that survived eventually became Zombies, or worse.
Both the US and China received the ransom demand - and Umbrella also heard about it. This prompted Umbrella themselves to give more information to the two affected countries in order for them to find out where exactly Duvall was hiding. In response, the United States Army sent in
Bruce McGivern, a veteran US-STRATCOM agent alone to neutralise the threat. Shortly after coming aboard the Spencer Rain, he encountered Duvall and he proved to be quite the opponent. Gaining the upper hand, Duvall disarmed McGivern and then marched him onto the top deck where he could eliminate him, execution style.
However, China had also sent one of their own agents named
Fong Ling. She interrupted the execution with a well-timed grenade which damaged the top deck and critically injured Duvall. Bruce and
Fong Ling left Duvall seemingly for dead and continued back into the ships interior. However, Duvall was somehow still alive and he painstakingly inched his way into a security control room where he released powerful B.O.W.s known as Hunter Elites to kill the two agents - but this plan soon failed, and the Hunters were no more. Feeling defeated and on the brink of death, Duvall decided that there was only one thing left do to, and like
William Birkin before him, he injected a sample of the brand new t+G virus into his own body.
Unlike Birkin however, the mutation was almost instant. He was revived to full strength, his body was vastly improved and he gained electro-magnetic abilities (which was a feature of the t+G virus). Satisfied with his new body, which was distinctly feminine and slender he proceeded to hunt down the two agents. In his current state, it was impossible to harm him with conventional weaponry as the electro-magnetic features of his body simply repelled any bullet that would go near him. It's unclear why exactly the virus gave him feminine features, it's perhaps something unknown that was already part of his DNA or his body which caused this.
After a handful of encounters, Duvall eventually decided that it was time to call off the hunt as the ship was nearing his island facility - he could simply disembark and launch the missiles at this point and nobody could stop him. The ship soon ran aground and exploded in a huge fireball. All three escaped the ship in time and they all proceeded to make their way to the island facility. It was also around this time that China agreed to Duvall's demands and promised him their share of the ransom money in exchange for their safety. As such,
Fong Ling was no longer required there and her existence there would be denied by her government.
Duvall made it into his facility and through to the underwater Bio-Sphere where he found that a viral outbreak had occurred there. Outraged that this happened while he was away, he destroyed a platform elevator which Bruce and
Fong Ling were trying to use in order to enter the Bio-Sphere. Hoping this would kill them, he proceeded to a computer which he could use in order to start the missile launch sequence. Bruce soon awakened after the elevators destruction but
Fong Ling remained unconscious.
Using her as bait, Duvall took
Fong Ling hostage in order to distract Bruce long enough that the missile launches would be successful. Little did he realise though, Bruce had acquired an experimental weapon that Duvall and his team had designed to eliminate problem B.O.W.s that had been infected with the t+G virus named the Charged Particle Rifle. Firing the weapon at Duvall proved that it worked - the beam passed straight through his electro-magnetic barrier and injured him. As is the case with all high-level infections with the
t-Virus and G-Virus, the infection tried to compensate for the damage leading Duvall to mutate into gradually more monstrous forms until eventually all beautiful aspects were lost, and after that all human aspects apart from the head. Interestingly Duvall retains his intelligence and is even able to speak regularly throughout all of his mutations - it's likely that the virus avoids altering the head and the brain too much.
One final bullet to the head once the electro-magnetic ability was lost through poor mutations killed Duvall who at this point resembled nothing more than a blob. The missile launches were then aborted and Bruce escaped the island with
Fong Ling and returned to their respective countries.
Duvall and his team were now gone, the crisis was over and Umbrella could then wipe this bead of sweat from their brow.
