The Therizinosaurus ("Scythe-Lizard") was a large dinosaur which was suddenly torn from the prehistoric period where it lived almost 70 million years ago, and into the present as a result of a Third Energy generator failure at a facility on Ibis Island. This dinosaur, along with many others were transported to the modern era - but only a handful seem to have made it through despite also another, separate portal remaining open for some time.
They seemed to have congregated around the deepest level of the Third Energy facility as they were not observed anywhere else. How they got there was a mystery, however most of the dinosaurs which had been transported seemed fairly adept at navigating man-made structures so it could be that something in the area drew in the Therizinosaurus; most likely the Third Energy generator itself.
The Therizinosaurus have an extremely powerful attack and are quite resilient. They attack with their large, sharp claws and teeth and have enough strength to pick up a human adult and throw them with force. They also have a move where they can trample on downed prey and instantly kill them. On some occasions they attack in pairs, making them extremely formidable and some of the most dangerous dinosaurs on Ibis Island.
Interestingly in real life, Therizinosaurus were vastly different than their depictions in
Dino Crisis. They had a beak instead of teeth and fed entirely on plants and leaves. They were also much, much larger and probably had feathers, giving them a more bird-like appearance. Finally, they had shorter arms, more like a
T. Rex. In the game they are essentially based on the
Velociraptor.
