Dr. Edward Kirk was a highly experienced and intelligent researcher who theorised the advent of Third Energy, which could be capable of creating an almost infinite amount of clean energy simply using the surrounding air as a fuel, whilst leaving only trace amounts of pollution in the production. His theory gained the attention of the U.S. Government who began to fund his research. However, after a few fruitless years the government suddenly pulled his funding which put Dr. Kirk in a state of limbo.
After some time, the Borginian Republic decided to secretly start funding his research once again and offered up an unused facility on the remote Ibis Island which the republic controlled. However, they had a caveat - they wanted Third Energy to be utilised as a kind of super weapon in exchange for the grant. He agreed, and the two worked on a cover story in which it was reported through official channels that Dr. Kirk had died in an accidental explosion.
Dr. Kirk and his team transferred to Ibis Island to continue the development of Third Energy science theory and its equipment. One of his first undertakings under the new regime was to build a new Third Energy reactor, but this unfortunately did not have a strong enough Stabilizer (an electrical dampener of sorts which is designed to limit overloads and such) and the reactor exploded which caused hundreds of deaths and set the research back many years, as now a lot of time had to be put into building a new reactor, a better stabiliser, cleaning up the destruction and re-building the trust in his team.
The length of time it was taking to develop a product strained Dr. Kirk as well as the rest of his team who were now being marginalised by him, simply giving them general tasks and basic calculations while he took all of the heavy lifting on himself. This perceived sloppiness caught the attention of the Borginian Republic and they demanded another test of the product so they could see its progress.
This test was more successful than the previous one, as the stabilizer was more advanced. However, it was still generating far too much energy at an unmanageable rate - instead of an explosion this caused a bubble in space-time to generate around the area, which essentially brought that area from billions of years in the past into the present, and left the same area of the facility in the past. Another side-effect of this was that dinosaurs were on the land and as such they were too brought to the present. Interestingly a wormhole also appeared to open in another part of the facility which allowed anything and everything from the same prehistoric time period to pass through to now.
Additionally, whilst doing his research he formed a strong working relationship with a man named
Tom who was in fact an undercover S.O.R.T. field agent sent to monitor and report back on any findings, including whether Dr. Kirk was alive. Once S.O.R.T. realised that he indeed was alive and that Third Energy was being funded by some other manner, they immediately dispatched a team to investigate and recover the doctor and the research data.
Dr. Kirk was eventually captured and taken from Ibis Island by
Regina and brought back to the U.S. along with his research data into Third Energy. He decided to come clean and tried to work with the U.S. Government again on further experiments.
As the game features a degree of player choice, it's also possible to leave Dr. Kirk on the island. It's unclear whether he lives or dies in this scenario, but the canon decision is that he is captured.
