Edward Dewey was a member of elite special forces S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) Bravo team. As a fully licensed pilot, he often flew their helicopter when being dispatched to mission areas. He was also their rear security expert and at times, needed to step aside and become a co-pilot if his specialist skills were needed. Also, while not his expertise per-se, he was interested in mechanics and helped repair equipment when it was necessary.

On a mission to the Arklay Mountains, he served as co-pilot with RPD officer Kevin Dooley taking the main pilots chair. His expertise in security was needed as the team assumed they were being dispatched onto a search and rescue mission like they had done many times before. However, this time things were different; the helicopters engines succumbed to a technical fault whilst they were over the Raccoon Forest, quite near to their ultimate location. As the engines failed, the helicopter descended to the ground and both Edward and Kevin both strived to keep the craft level with the aim of landing safely.

Unfortunately due to the heavy woodland, the helicopter hit several trees on its descent and was sent into a spin. Despite this, they managed to save everybody on board and land safely in the forest. While Kevin stayed behind to inspect the damage and find ways to repair the craft, Edward and the rest of Bravo team (which included the young Rebecca Chambers) proceeded into the forest. Shortly after, they discovered the remains of a crashed police van along with two bodies - the onboard cell was empty, and they discovered paperwork found on board which stated that it had once carried Billy Coen. Now they knew they had an armed convict somewhere in the forest, and thus decided to split into two teams to search for him.

At was at this point that mutant Cerberus hounds attacked his team. They fought them off brazenly - while some perished, including Kevin, Edward survived but had received a devastating bite from one of the creatures. Others were far luckier such as Rebecca who escaped unharmed as she was in a separate team.

Mortally injured, Edward made his way to a nearby train named the Ecliptic Express, a transport that was previously used by high-ranking Umbrella employees to get from Raccoon City to facilities in the Arklay Mountains region. He found a safe place to rest and sat down against a wall. It wasn't very long until Rebecca had found Billy Coen wandering around the train and took him as her prisoner with the intention of bringing him in - oddly, he complied. Some time later, Rebecca found him in a bad way; barely conscious he managed to warn her that there were creatures in the forest and then he passed out. Rebecca and Billy then both simultaneously explored the train which had since started to move and looked for a way to stop it in its tracks.

Shortly after Rebecca and Billy pulled the emergency brake on the train, Edward had succumbed to his injuries and re-awakened as a Zombie - he had been mutated by the t-Virus which had been carried by the Cerberus'. He is then encountered again by Rebecca and put down for good.

There is a unique cut-scene which happens if Rebecca is the first one to meet Edward as a Zombie - if the player happens to be playing as Billy, he is encountered like any other Zombie encounter with no cinematics.

Interestingly, Edward Dewey originally meant to have his hand ripped off by a Cerberus. In fact, this is mentioned in the original Resident Evil and shown in a cut-scene for Resident Evil (Remake). However, he appears to have both his hands intact in Resident Evil 0. Either this was a scrapped idea, an oversight or just forgotten.
