The Pteranodon is a large flying reptile belonging to the family pterosaur - and are in fact not a dinosaur as is commonly thought. They were extinct prehistoric creatures that occupied the Earth over 80 million years ago. Due to the Third Energy event which occurred on Ibis Island, they were brought forward to the present along with all other flora and fauna that existed there at those times.
They have an extremely wide wingspan, large feet with claws and a long beak. Their beaks are structured primarily so they can catch and eat
Fish, but the specimens found in and around Ibis Island have learned to perceive humans as a threat and will also kill and consume them on sight. They are so strong in fact, that they can pick up and carry an adult human with relative ease.
In some cases, Pteranodon's are also encountered in groups in which case they are quite dangerous. However when encountering them solo, they are more of a pest and is makes more sense to simply run past as they are limited to outdoor areas.
It's worth pointing out that in real life, it was discovered that Pteranodon's only had an appetite for
Fish and their feet could not lift anything due to their construction. Their bodies are also far more streamlined and aerodynamic than what is depicted in the games. It's also thought that they were quadruped (as in, they walked on all-fours on the ground).
