The Zombie Lion was an ordinary Lion which became afflicted with the t-Virus through accidental means; the virus was exposed to Raccoon City's water supply and caused an outbreak throughout. When the infected water reached the Raccoon Zoo, virtually all of its animals succumbed to it and were transformed into Zombies.

There were four Lions held at the zoo in total, and surprisingly their t-Virus alterations did not alter their behaviour too drastically. For example, they retained all of their animal instincts - preferring to hunt in packs and prowl for unsuspecting prey. What did change was their size and aggression; they became very large and extremely violent. Other typical t-Virus characteristics were decaying skin and a more mottled appearance. Surprisingly, a lot of their fur was retained which was especially notable in the male who still had their mane.

As the Zombie Lion was an accidental occurrence it was not tested by Umbrella. However, the company was likely able to observe it and evaluate it for future projects. Ultimate, they would have chosen not to create a Zombie Lion B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) in lab conditions - this is probably because realistically they weren't that much different from their usual state which made them unattractive to buyers.
