    Novels:
The almighty chicken has often been called the saviour of modern society. These domesticated creatures are bred mainly by farmers for their eggs and their meat. They are relatively straightforward livestock to take care of and are a reliable source of sustenance for a majority of animals including humans. They are also fairly intelligent in which they can react to danger and also defend themselves where necessary. In earlier times they were used for entertainment in the form of cockfighting, but these days that kind of activity has become frowned upon as it can be seen as a form of animal cruelty.

On that note, the chickens in the Resident Evil series are nothing more than egg factories that can also be killed. Chickens in the games generally drop four different kinds of eggs at random intervals. If killed, there is a chance the chicken will drop one final egg, but after this they vanish and do not respawn.

The most common eggs a chicken will drop are the White Egg or Brown Egg, giving a 50% health recovery and a 25% health recovery respectively. If you're lucky you can also get a Golden Egg, which fully replenishes health but they can also be sold for many times more than a regular Brown Egg. In Resident Evil 5 chickens can also drop the Rotten Egg which can also be sold for a hefty amount. This egg can be eaten by the player but it is not recommended as it can put your character in a Danger state automatically.

All Eggs can also be thrown as a distraction to the enemy, or to just inconvenience them. However a Rotten Egg will cause damage, and it's even possible to kill regular enemies with one.

The Chicken also briefly appears in Resident Evil 6 and while they can be killed, there is no benefit to doing so. It's also worth pointing out that none of the chickens seen in the series appear to be infected with any strain of Virus seen so far.
