The Anubis (named after the Egyptian God who was said to guide the souls of the dead to their judgement in the afterlife) was a B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) developed by Umbrella while they were experimenting with different types of animal DNA with the aim of building a much lower cost and easier to ship version of the Hunter series of B.O.W.s.

The creature used a fruit Bat as a base, then some kind of insect DNA was introduced and finally the t-Virus was used to bind the two. As the t-Virus began to mutate the Bat and the insect characteristics were forming, it had some internal organs removed such as its stomach and gut. The mutation also caused its skin and a majority of its musculature to dissipate, leaving it with an extremely skeletal appearance. Based on its body it is surmised that the Anubis would not live very long, due to the fact it could not feed and its internal structure was fully exposed, especially its heart which, like many t-Virus infected creatures, was enlarged and exposed though a gap in its rib cage.

Visually, it has the rough appearance of a skeletal Bat but with large talons at the end of its wing structure, now repurposed as extended arms. It also had sharp teeth, a pointed exposed spine and a long tail. It used all of these to leap on any kind of surface including walls, ceilings and railings. It could also sprint towards an enemy, giving them less time to react.

It was a very fast and agile creature, but not particularly strong. Although its skeleton appeared to be reinforced due to its mutation, a few shots was usually more than enough to take one down.

Unfortunately, despite the promise of its low cost, the Hunter series continued to be developed on over the Anubis. Perhaps because the Hunter had higher intelligence and overall stability.
