S.T.A.R.S.

S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service) were a specially selected elite group of law enforcement officers who were tasked with responding to more delicate situations such as terrorism or biological warfare. In recent history, two teams were sent to the Arklay Mountains area relatively close to their base of operations in the Raccoon City Police Department where reports of animal attacks and cannibalism were reported.

Each member of the team has their own speciality and had been hand-picked by their captains. The team was partially funded by Umbrella and as such they had a limited amount of control over the team and were privy to their missions.

S.T.A.R.S. was officially disbanded soon after the Arklay Mountains incident by RPD Chief Brian Irons due to their massive losses and the remaining members began to question Umbrellas involvement as they discovered that it was the company itself who was to blame for the Arklay Mountains incident. They were replaced with a separate force named the S.P.F. (Special Police Force).

After the remainder of the team were scattered, the members that remained in Raccoon City were hunted down by Umbrella who developed a unique B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) named the Nemesis T-Type which was dispatched with instructions so eliminate all S.T.A.R.S. members it encountered. It successfully managed to kill one - pilot Brad Vickers, but Jill Valentine managed to evade its clutches and eventually managed to kill the monster herself.

After this event the few members left scattered the globe and joined other forces such as the BSAA and the H.C.F., for all different reasons. Some to combat Umbrella and their monsters and others to act as a rival, producing their own Biohazard research and development.

It's also important to note that many members of S.T.A.R.S. had custom weapons designed for them - most were designed by Robert Kendo and his brother at his shop in Raccoon City. Most of these weapons were variations of a Beretta M92F and were one-of-a-kind.
