Tyrell Patrick was a mercenary hired by Umbrella to be part of their UBCS (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) and his last role with the company was to attempt to secure Raccoon City and save as many civilians as possible.
He was born and raised in Suriname, South America, which later gained its independence from the Netherlands and he soon found his way into military life serving in the French Foreign Legion where he proved to be an excellent combatant. However, he also sold illegal weapons on the black market as he was obsessed with amassing wealth - and eventually this came back to haunt him as the weapons he sold were traced back to him and he was quickly identified, captured and sentenced to a life imprisonment.
Umbrella were aware of him and his abilities as a combatant, and they wanted him to be part of UBCS - an offer for his freedom was made in exchange for a position on the team which he gladly accepted. He was then released without charge and flown to the USA where he could begin his training and deployment.
With his expertise known he was also given the opportunity to become a secret intelligence gatherer known as a Monitor - even his platoon leader
Mikhail Viktor was not aware of his secondary role. His full mission involved attempting to secure Raccoon City, destroy any evidence linking Umbrella with the outbreak and also deliver combat data on the effectiveness of any B.O.W (Bio-Organic Weapon) he encountered and report this back to Umbrella. One such B.O.W. - the
Nemesis T-Type, was dispatched to Raccoon City in order to eliminate any remaining S.T.A.R.S. members (who escaped from the
Spencer Mansion and had information on Umbrellas atrocities).
The mission ended in a complete disaster with most of the UBCS being overwhelmed and decimated. The outbreak was far worse than could have been imagined, far worse than the Mansion incident - there were not simply pockets of isolated incidents like first thought, the entire city had fallen.
He tried his best to save as many civilians as possible, and later teamed up with
Carlos Oliveira and S.T.A.R.S. survivor
Jill Valentine in order to restore power to a subway train which was being used as a makeshift command centre of sorts. The crew needed the power restored as the train line served as the perfect evacuation point from the city. However, the
Nemesis T-Type managed to board the rear train car and make it's way towards the front where it was attempting to eliminate Jill - only Viktor, who was critically injured at the time sacrificed himself to give her and the others enough time to escape before the creature recovered.
Tyrell stayed behind and travelled to the Raccoon City Police Department building in order to find and destroy any information which would implicate Umbrella in the disaster. Then, he moved onto the Spencer Memorial Hospital as he was given orders to locate Dr
Nathaniel Bard - it was in the hospital where he realised just how dire the situation was going to get; a TV was switched on nearby and tuned to a news programme in which the reporter stated that Raccoon City was due to be bombed by the US Government to contain the situation as they believed that was the only way.
As Resident Evil 3 has multiple scenarios, there were three possible versions of Tyrell Patrick's death:
In one, he is killed by the insane Sergeant
Nikolai Zinoviev while he was making his way to the hospital.
In another, he managed to escape Zinoviev with a gunshot wound and when he arrives at the hospital, paranoia sets in and he begins to see Carlos as a threat, pointing his weapon at him and delivering a clue as to what his role really was. Tyrell begins to open a safe while Carlos asks who the Monitor was, only to find that the safe was booby-trapped with C4 which explodes immediately and Tyrell is killed. Carlos survives as Tyrell's body acted as a shield to the blast (This scenario is considered non-canon and is more of a secret storyline).
In a final scenario, Tyrell makes his way to the hospital safely and attempts to make contact with the US Government, making a deal to delay the bombing to give him and his partners enough time to escape the city. However, as they made their way to the NEST-2 facility, the
Nemesis T-Type appeared once again and launched one of it's deadly tentacles at him which went right through his chest and then he was finished off by being thrown at a solid wall.
In all cases Tyrell Patrick would not survive Raccoon City, struggling through until the very end.
Also, in the S.D. Perry book named Resident Evil: Nemesis, Tyrell Patrick is re-imagined as a completely different character named Ken Franklin. Although not explicitly the same, their character arcs are very similar.
