Dr Nathaniel Bard was a high ranking biologist who worked for Umbrella. Early in his career he was promoted to a senior researcher role and was responsible for the production of many useful drugs that were subsequently released across America and brought in huge profits for the company. Although not specifically stated, it's most likely that Dr Bards research resulted in the release of
Adravil,
Safsprin,
Aqua Cure and potentially others.
However, his abrasive nature towards others resulted in colleagues and others working around him beginning to gather evidence against him to use in a lawsuit in order to bring him down. Once he himself learned of this, he ordered his secretary to obtain the evidence and hand it over so he could first see what they had on him, and then he presumably destroyed it.
Aside from his front-facing role, he also conducted typical Umbrella virus research in an underground facility named NEST-2 snd had a large influence over Bio-Weapons and Bio-Organic Weapons research. The facility had the ability to construct a vaccine for the
t-Virus which was created when the hospital began taking in a small number patients with
t-Virus infection characteristics. However some time later the
t-Virus outbreak occurred in the entire city when the water supply became contaminated which resulted in the city becoming a quarantine zone and then patients were transferred between the hospital and the NEST-2 facility, in order to perfect the vaccine.
However, a vaccine is something that Umbrella could not let out into the open as it would render most, if not all of their B.O.W.s powerless if administered. Dr Bard became extremely anxious about his situation, fearing that Umbrella would soon send in their Security Services to kill him. He reached out to his friends in the US government and the local Raccoon City Police Department but got no reply - unfortunately his requests for help were heard by Sergeant
Nikolai Zinoviev - who had ulterior movies and soon located Dr Bard in his office and assassinated him.
His legacy continued after his death, as the vaccine samples were left behind in his office and were later collected and fashioned into a working
t-Virus cure using the technology available in the NEST-2 facility which was still fully operational at the time.
Dr Bard was a brilliant scientist and an asset to Umbrella - but as soon as the
t-Virus knocked on his door he most likely realised just how wrong the company was operating and so the vaccine was the only way to stop them. However, only a small sample was left in tact. In the end, he managed to indirectly save the life of
Jill Valentine who had earlier been infected with the virus - the vaccine worked, and the resulting antibodies which were created in her body were later used to help research curing the virus.
