Hoffman was a mostly unknown man who was captured by
Lucas Baker and then was forced to play a sadistic card game of 21, with rules similar to Blackjack - with
Clancy Jarvis, the Sewer Gators cameraman who was also captured by Lucas. Hoffman had a burlap bag over his head the entire time he is seen and his face was never known. Hoffman does mention that he has a wife (unnamed) and a daughter named Melissa.
He ended up having all his fingers chopped off with a guillotine device as he lost all of his games against Clancy and through the shock he began to fade in and out of consciousness until he eventually passed out. He regained consciousness shortly after and was forced to continue playing despite his grievous injuries - he lost a second time and his fate was a violent electric shock which makes him appear dead.
Clancy pleads with Lucas to let him go as he has won and his opponent is no longer alive, but in an extremely cruel twist Lucas then begins to control Hoffman's body with string as if he is a puppet, with the next part of the game featuring a suspended saw which will inevitably kill the loser by ripping their head apart.
Unfortunately for him (even in his unconscious state), Clancy continues to be victorious and briefly Hoffman regains consciousness only to see the saw right in front of him and it kills him after a second or two of bone splitting agony followed by a shower of blood.
Hoffman can actually appear in various forms, including an undead version with spikes through his head (and bag), and a
Molded version where he is clearly infected but still is a dab hand at cards.. There is also a version called Mr Big Head that is most likely Hoffman but with a huge cartoon mascot helmet on instead of a burlap bag.
Hoffman may be a reference to Mark Hoffman, a prominent character from the Saw franchise; a series of horror films which featured sadistic games where losing usually meant maiming and killing using unique crafted machinery and traps.
