Power Limiter

  • A Power Limiter is an anti-mutation device developed by Umbrella for use with their Tyrant series of Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W.s). The technology is secret, although what is known is that it is equipped with sensors which can detect what kind of condition the Tyrant is in - as they can discard the Power Limiter if there is no other option.

Essentially, the Power Limiter is installed onto a Tyrant to prevent it from mutating too greatly. The main issue with mutation being increased brain damage, heightened aggression and the overdevelopment of muscle tissue, a heart which becomes exposed, as well as other mutations such as claws. Being left to mutate freely renders a Tyrant unsuitable as a super soldier, which is what they were developed to be used for.

Earlier experiments with the Tyrants before the advent of the Power Limiter has shown that they will continually mutate to a level where they cannot be controlled.

In general, a Power Limiter resembles clothing. For example, the T-103 Tyrant (Mr X) wore a long trench coat, with gloves and boots. The outfit was outfitted with wires, belts and metal plating - essentially holding the creature together with some unknown technology to keep it's mutations at bay. In this form they resembled a large human at a certain range, their intelligence was only mildly affected by the mutations - for example they could follow orders, conduct specific missions and provide "muscle" where required.

On close inspection, the T-103 also had a small electronic device embedded in its head - while this device has never been analysed, it was thought to be a probe which gave the tyrant more intelligence and allowed it to remain calm, even when engaging with its target.

If the Tyrant sustains enough damage (i.e. enough damage to potentially destroy it), the Power Limiter will deactivate, allowing the creature to mutate further and recover rapidly, which affects it's appearance and behaviour. At this stage it becomes known as a Super Tyrant, and no smarter than your average raging monster.

A Super Tyrant is what the Tyrant would become if there was no Power Limiter involved. In the T-103's case, it bulked up in muscle and skin thickness, it's heart become exposed and both of it's hands mutated into large claws.

In the Resident Evil 2 Remake, the T-00 (A Version of the T-103 Tyrant) also wore a fedora. If Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield shoot the hat off it's head, the monster will be irritated by this and push harder to attack you.

The Nemesis T-Type from Resident Evil 3 does not wear a Power Limiter. Although it is based on the T-103, it is infected with a parasite that gives the monster it's strength, so it's coat and safety wrapping is purely used for armour, as it is only physical damage which causes it to heal and mutate.
