Zombie is a relatively unique
Zombie in that it was hiding in the back of
Leon S. Kennedy's patrol car when he and
Claire Redfield were heading to Raccoon City to try and figure out what was happening - little did they know they had a passenger with them. It's assumed either the
Zombie was previously under arrest and was being transferred to the station or the opposite; he was initially a survivor who was being rescued and later became infected.
At first the
Zombie was dormant but eventually it sprang up from the back which caused
Leon to lose control of the vehicle which causes him to crash. Soon after this the
Truck Driver appears to be driving directly at them as he was now himself a
Zombie and could not control his vehicle.
Interestingly in
Resident Evil 2 the Cop Car
Zombie looks a lot like
Leon. It's assumed that this was simply a time and cost-saving measure as building high quality 3D models for cut scenes would have been relatively expensive at the time. In other appearances this
Zombie has it's own unique look.
Also, in the movie Zombieland, Rule #31 is "Check the Back Seat" - this could be a reference to the game.
