The core of Modern Warfare 4 is good, but the problem is with the skill based matchmaking. I did a hands-on with the game, and is largely what I feel about the game so far...
It really is. I actually enjoyed it when they tried something different with Infinite Warfare (the space setting, the tone, the campaign structure); it was one of the few times the series genuinely broke out of its comfort zone. But fans absolutely tore it apart, and ever since then it feels like the devs are scared to experiment.
I'm on record saying that Infinite Warfare is such a good game. Both Single Player, and Multiplayer. You go into a lobby of Infinite Warfare, and you're getting almost 70 frames per second, as if someone turned on boost mode.
Sometimes I think the fanbase ends up being its own worst enemy.
I disagree. We ARE getting what we asked for. The problem is not the graphics, the problem is not the gameplay, the problem is not ANYTHING ELSE. Each Call of Duty title has twists on the formula that doesn't stay bland and stale. The problem is that nobody is currently listening to the "wisdom of the crowd." I'll explain more...
People say they want innovation, but when CoD does anything outside the usual modern‑military formula, the backlash is instant. So now we're stuck in this loop where the devs don't want to take risks, and the series keeps feeling more and more predictable.
It's not that players don't want anything outside of the "usual modern-military formula," it's just that the developers are not listening to the "crowd." For example, when Infinite Warfare came out, we'd already had two straight futuristic games in a row. Once WWII came out, everyone bought it, even those who don't like World War II theatre. I'm one of those people. I was not born of that era. There are a lot of history buffs that enjoy it. The problem here is, the gameplay style was vastly different from the normal Call of Duty formula. WWII was using a class system, not a perk-bound system.
Black Ops 4 was almost perfect for a futuristic game, but I call it trash because the spawns are ATROCIOUS. You would spawn in the same fucking place all the time. You die? You go back to your "A" flag spawn. You die? A flag. You die? A flag, again. People would even spawn trap that same flag to kill the person over and over and over again.
Modern Warfare 2019 returned the series to the roots, and was faced with a lot of issues from launch. Red dots on mini-map, at all times? What the fuck are you doing!? And this game was the beginning of Skill Based Matchmaking that persists today - an algorithm that watches you play the game and nerfs you as you play.
Black Ops Cold War was actually fresh, new, and actually a game I'd play. Issue? Glitches. Again.
Vanguard? We don't talk about Vanguard.
We also don't talk about Modern Warfare II (2022). That is the worst Call of Duty game of all time. Sorry. Does not live up to the MW2 legacy.
I'd love to see them try something bold again, but I'm not sure the community would let them.
They would, the problem is that these developers are not understanding the problems, and not learning from them.
