The Giant Moth was a regular Moth which was experimented on by Umbrella in their NEST facility which was situated under Raccoon City. They differ from the Moth which was a separate creature that developed from accidental exposure to the t-Virus.
Umbrella were intending on using the Giant Moth as a B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon). It was much larger and out of proportion than the Moth and as such had trouble flying, which made it an unsuitable B.O.W. They were all to be destroyed by the company but a single Giant Moth managed to escape and create a nest within the ventilation systems of the aptly named NEST facility. They had the ability to asexually reproduce leading to a large number of the creatures being present during the t-Virus outbreak of Raccoon City.
They were easily defeated with a spreading weapon such as a shotgun or flamethrower. If their wings were destroyed they reverted to running along the floor, meaning they were still a threat even without their limited flight capabilities.
