Let's Encrypt's Root Certificate is expiring!

On 30th September 2021, the root certificate that Let's Encrypt are currently using, the IdentTrust DST Root CA X3 certificate, will expire. You may or may not need to do anything about this Root CA expiring, but I'm betting a few things will probably break on that day

Following recent outages of various data centres, there's now another issue effecting the Internet! This probably won't impact quite as many people, other than their browsers complaining of certificate errors.. but for some businesses with managed services and web filtering, it could be quite the headache since such errors are likely to result in legitimate websites being blocked!

On top of this, today the Facebook group have had some major issues which meant that the majority of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and even the Facebook-owned Oculus VR software is down.

Just makes you wonder, a company as large as Facebook and their literal only job is online platforms… You'd think they would have several layers of redundancy and failsafes to stop this kinda thing from happening.

At current it's been several hours, it's affecting my work as WhatsApp groups are pretty much essential for business comms.. and everyone is kinda in the dark.

I'm told that the issues with Facebook / WhatsApp / Instagram were particularly funny, because staff struggled to gain access to the building and servers to resolve the issues since the door access all ran off the same systems..

Haha yeah it's crazy that they had literally ONE datacenter that handled so much of their structure.

You'd think they'd at least have a way to override. Like a key.

Honestly I'm not really surprised to hear about this, Facebook have proven time and time again that they can be quite incompetent. Sadly this is actually true for a lot of the tech world.

So very true. They get popular, then they get complacent, then they get lazy, then they get into trouble.

Odd I didn't hear about this sooner, never saw any issues either. Guess it wasn't as big as people made it out to be.

A good sign for a keyless future that we are sure to enter very soon. Cars are going to be the next problem where they start putting the car key within an app on your phone.
