So this game was released a few days ago, it's a third-person story driven action-adventure / rpg that is quite similar to the Mass Effect series, it also appears to share some DNA with the most recent Tomb Raider games. It's made by Eidos Montreal who created Shadow of the Tomb Raider as well as the Deus Ex prequel series.

This game is really well crafted, unlike Marvel's Avengers which felt like more of a social experiment with a hollow narrative pasted on top. That game had some great moments but most of it was a disappointment. On the other hand Guardians has an interesting plot, fantastic voice acting and lots of cool set pieces and the presentation is quite beautiful. The humour level is better than you'd expect from a video game (it's genuinely funny) and the soundtrack is great.

There are some issues, some early technical issues such as certain triggers not activating (I've had to 'restart last checkpoint' a couple of times) as well as a couple of minor visual bugs (mostly to do with reflections) but these are likely to be patched as time goes on. It appears to run great on PC - I've got everything cranked up to Ultra with all Ray Tracing stuff on Max as well. It also supports DLSS so you can squeeze more frames of it out without a distinguishable loss in visual quality. There's probably gonna be a DF video at some stage!

So yeah. I was originally put off the idea of this game based on how I reacted to Marvel's Avengers. Still, I decided to take the plunge either way and pick it up and was not disappointed. It's definitely worth a play.. Especially if you enjoy stuff like Mass Effect, Deus Ex, Dragon Age and whatnot.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

Glad they were able to make a better game. MA was a really big failure, so I'm happy they were able to make up with this game, I hope it keeps getting updates.

I'm a lot of the way through the game now, I can safely say that so far this is my Game of the Year. Even over Metroid Dread!

I just love how self aware the game is. It's like it's been playtested to death. e.g. There's an early boss battle where the game will do all the usual videogame things like show the boss name with a huge ass health bar, only for it to be instantly killed by something before it even starts. And in the same part of the game Rocket messes with your hud to show an arcade-like points system and Star-Lord will constantly complain about having to look at it.

And whenever you just wander off the path to explore, characters usually say stuff like where the hell are you going? What are you expecting to find? etc. And if you stall for too long they'll comment on that as well. Or if you start shooting stuff randomly.... or fluff on an ability... Basically there seems to be voice lines for EVERYTHING. They really have thought of everything a player might do.

That's a strong statement, I don't see anything better than Dread, I'll have to try it out at some point.
