Higurashi When They Cry
Adventure Visual Novel
Higurashi When They Cry is a Japanese murder mystery visual novel. The series is focused on a group of young friends and the strange events that occur in the rural village of Hinamizawa, where they reside. The gameplay requires relatively little player interaction as most of the game is composed of text dialogues. The original release contained no voice acting for the characters. The game utilizes intermissions where the player can obtain several Tips. These Tips allow the player to read various supplementary information that may or may not be useful in solving the mystery.

Not sure if this is the best board... It's definitely horror, but not survival, and many people would debate if Visual Novels should count as games or not. So @Oblivion Knight pls feel free to move if this is an unsuitable board.

Either way, has anyone read through the Higurashi / When They Cry series before? I was so obsessed with this franchise when I was a teen (though admittedly I did prefer the successor franchise Umineko a lot more).

It's definitely good and has some really creepy moments, but the author R07 isn't the best writer... he often drags scenes out and re-uses analogies constantly (Like a puppet... whos strings... had been cut) but overall there's a lot to love with the WTC franchise, they have good mysteries, characters, and the music in both Higurashi and Umineko is god-tier

Never has horror looked so.. cutesy! 👀

I've never heard or seen of the series before, but if it's horror - it can stay.

The cutesiness is how it gets you alright - things start out very fun and playful and just turns into complete and utter insanity

It gets really insane, let me tell you. The art style turned away some people I tried to get into it but man. I also think Umineko should probably be on here too perhaps...

The OST for Umineko is also god tier level of good. It has some of the best music in a game I ever listened to outside of a few tracks from the recent Pokemon games.
